American Decameron, by Mark Dunn

Review

Dunn uses regular story form with set-up, action and denouement as well as the vignette: a slice of life without a neat conclusion, but no less interesting...Dunn’s endings are happy, sad, odd, surprising and very often amusing. (Alice Leaderman - washingtonindependentreviewofbooks.com)

If you would like to visit all the states in the United States (some more than just once), if you would like those visits to cover an entire century and thereby allow you the fun of exploring unique moments in the development of the nation and its citizens, then American Decameron will provide you a wide range of delightful experiences. Each story in the chronological series is admirably descriptive of the people and events associated with the year in which it is set. Each is the perfect length for dipping into at bedtime, each closing the day with a dollop of literary delight.

This is a great choice for when you need a book to read bits of and put down and pick up and read bits....100 short stories, each pretty well fleshed-out, representative of a year in the life of 20th century America.I enjoyed this quite a lot and passed it on to my best friend.

What was life like in the 20th century? Mark Dunn gives us a glimpse into the times with stories about the people who lived it. Dunn doesn't just skate across the surface, telling us about history-making situations, but also the everyday experiences of the American population. Learn something and enjoy the stories.

Mark Dunn has always been an author who thinks out of the box. I have always been a big fan and look forward to his next book or play.

I assume that Mark Dunn likes to challenge himself as a writer. For him, it doesn't seem like just writing a great book is enough of a one though. He's got to find a way to tell his story in a way that's unique, original, and that adds an extra level of enjoyment for those who read it.With his first and probably most widely read book Ella Minnow Pea, he wrote a story in epistolary form while progressively limiting the letters of the alphabet that he could utilize. With Welcome to Higby he prefaced every chapter of the book with an obscure biblical verse that foreshadowed the contents of the chapter. In Ibid: A Novel he writes a fictitious biography of Blashette, a three-legged circus performer and deodorant salesman. On almost every page of the book Dunn includes footnotes. And the footnotes are what tell the true story Dunn is writing. With a nod of his head to Giovanni Boccaccio, a 14th century Italian author who wrote Decameron, a book consisting of 100 tales, Dunn uses for the subject of his story, 20th century America. Dunn's 100 tales are independent stories that span the years 1901-2000 with at least one story taking place in every one of the 50 states. In some stories Dunn makes up his characters and has them experience actual historical events from the century. Other times his characters were real and the events that took place in their lives truly happened, but the events are obscure and highly entertaining. Some of the stories are funny, some are tragic, some contain a twist, and many will make you pause and think. But they all bear the qualities of a Mark Dunn tale.I loved this book and highly recommend it. But it's not short. With 100 stories averaging 6-7 pages each, the book as a whole is a doorstop. But it's the type of book you can pick up whenever you have a few minutes of free time and read a complete and entertaining story from start to finish and then go about your day.

I had the pleasure of reading this book in manuscript form and as an author myself I was both envious of Dunn's achievement and inspired by it. From the more objective perspective of a reader, the book had me enthralled through all of its years and decades. A tremendously fascinating and satisfying literary experience. You rock, Dunn!!
