(RabidReads.com)So far, the Boundary Magic trilogy has been a very entertaining listen for me. I’ve not read a lot of witch books, but the type of witch that the main character is was a new one for me. Very unique.Lex is a boundary witch, a war veteran, and a wonderful aunt to her deceased twin sister’s baby girl. She’s also working for the head vampire of Colorado and seeing where things go as far as a relationship with Quinn, a vampire she partners with. It’s Halloween night when Lex realizes that members of the supernatural community of Boulder are acting a bit(or a lot) “off”. Things that shouldn’t happen, are happening. Witches are all high strung and wired up. Werewolves are coming into places that are forbidden to them. Ghosts are not only showing up, but are able to be seen and heard clearly in some instances. Vampires are partaking in blood in an open environment among humans. And an ancient evil is unearthed-literally-and is now eating humans. Nerd(but handsome) witch Simon and his sister Lily also feature prominently.I am finding these books to be really fun. They are not comedy, but there is some humor, some really great characters, and a creative premise. The villain(ancient evil) this time was really unique and nicely fleshed out by the author. Of course, there is also more than one villain for Lex to come up against. I enjoyed a really fun scene between Lex and a ghost of a madame from a bordello of the past. Actually there were several fun scenes with other supernatural characters, the werewolves become helpers at one point, and another rare kind of witch is brought into the fray. But none of the other witches are as rare as Lex. She’s known as a death witch of sorts. She can bring back someone that is dying or has just died, and can cause the death just as easily. She’s still learning her powers, but at least she didn’t kill all the fish in a pond this time. The best part is that she can’t really die. If so, she would never have made it out of childhood after drowning. Of course, beheading would do the trick.Narration? I am enjoying listening to this series, although I also own the eBooks. Kate Rudd narrated all three books and I can’t imagine anyone better for this character. She deftly handled both the female voices and did really well with the male voices. I really appreciate a narrator that can do male voices without me being taken out of the story by a really bad effort. So I was really happy with this narrator and wouldn’t hesitate to listen to anything else she narrates. Narration for me was 5 stars out of 5.I would classify this as urban fantasy, although she is having a relationship with Quinn that is still new. Things did heat up for them in this installment, some details, but nothing explicit. And that was fine with me. More explicit wouldn’t have bothered me either, so either way it was good. Lots of action also contributed to this story and kept me on the edge of my seat at times while reading.Highly recommended to urban fantasy readers and paranormal romance fans would probably enjoy this as well.

I still love Lex. She’s tough and actually handling all the dramatic changes relatively well. When she aligned herself with the vampires she somehow managed to separate herself even more from the witches. It probably works out better for Lex, though, because all the supernatural factions are going through some issues of the magical variety. The short story that takes place in between books really sets the stage for Lex’s future run-ins with werewolves, which factor prominently in this book. They really bring home the point that werewolves are just like humans – the bad ones can be bad and the good ones can be good. They all just suffer through the same “curse.” Also, yuck, there’s a really yucky big bad that’s up to no good (as if they need more bad to hunt).I’m not sure what to make of the romantic element in this story. I much prefer Lex to be independent and awesome on her own without having all these entanglements. Maybe that’s what we’ll ultimately get? I hope so, because I don’t really want another Scarlett situation. I also much prefer Lex’s way of handling strange situations without a partner. Watching her figure things out using her experience and intelligence is more satisfying than the “phone a friend” option, in my opinion.

I really enjoyed this book. It is well written, smooth flowing and easy to read. It kept me captivated from the first page through the last. Once I started the book I couldn't put it down. The author does a great job portraying the characters, their emotions and the experiences they go through.Lex now knows she is a boundary witch and works for the Vampire in charge of the state, Maven. All the sudden at Samhain (Halloween), the supernatural people in Boulder start acting weird. She first notices with the witches, then others. Extreme measures are going to have to be taken to find out what is causing the problem and what to do about it.Tensions are already high between the witches and vampires. Witches had to agree to give up their Apex magic and serve Maven for 20 years when she agreed to help take out the werewolf alpha who was destroying and torturing his wolves and others. That path was made 13 years ago. Since then, there are no werewolves in Colorado. This book is full of mystery and suspense. I highly recommend it.

Another great book by Melissa. I liked the turns to the plot and the dynamic of the characters. Melissa introduces a nearby werewolf pack into the plot, and explores Lex's feelings (and prejudice) against werewolves. Lex is clearly still trying to come to terms with being a part of the Old World, and has clearly not fully adopted her station at the beginning of the book. The Old World is still those "other" people, not entirely realizing that she is now part of that "other". I was a little surprised to see Lex get over her prejudice towards werewolves so quickly, but then again, it's not like she had built up years of habit hating them.We see further development of Lex as a witch and a player in the Old World, and like Scarlett, coming into her own. Lex's comfort with her powers grow, and she begins thinking about how she wants to play her situation, given the few options she has. Lex shows a bit more diplomacy than we might have come to expect from a PTSD veteran dealing with newfound witch powers. We gain a better understanding of what a boundary witch is, and what she can do, through Lex's journey and contact with a boundary witch's ghost. We get a little romance, a lot of tension, a little drama, and further insight into the other characters surrounding Lex's new life. This was a fun read.
