Disappointing purchase. The title is grossly misleading, this is more accurately described as the complete dictionary to chip carving. Without any real flow or guidance the book just jumps straight into complicated borders and designs without actually explaining the fundamentals of the craft. The book is ok if you want high gloss pictures of chip carvings far beyond the capabilities of a complete beginner, but even some of those pictures are oddly out of focus or blurry.For the true beginner I would recommend watching YouTube videos. The only truly useful information for a beginner lies within the first 35 pages or so where the author goes into detail on how to correctly hold and position the knives. Lets be serious with ourselves for a minute here though, less than 5 minutes of googling will reveal the exact same information. There is, at no point in the book, any sort of description on how to draw patterns, only on how to trace a pattern. Thanks but I learned how to trace in elementary school, I would much rather have instruction on how to use a drawing compass to design the complicated geometric designs involved in chip carving. After a few days of reading the book and trying to teach myself skills FAR beyond the beginners level I hopped on YouTube and within 30 minutes was making extraordinary progress. Disappointing.
My dad loves chip carving, so I bought him this for Father's Day. Looking through it, it looks very well written and detailed with how to pictures and designs. It looks to be more for an advanced student, with some really beautiful items to make. There is quite a bit of variety and some unique crafts. I really think he will enjoy it and perhaps make me something out of it. ;)
Wayne had/has a major role in promoting Chip Carving here in the USA. I've taken a Carving and Design Class from him and seen his kitchen with cabinet doors and breakfast nook bench sides chip carved. He's really a GREAT guy! I've now taught Chip Carving at Carving Clubs and the local WoodCraft store for many years.
This book is great for beginners to learn some basic techniques and get started in chip carving. Some nice project ideas. My beginning chip carver (age 17) loves it and is inspired to try harder projects. We received some very pretty chip carved Christmas ornaments this year.

Comprehensive, clear direction. I used this book to teach myself chip carving and have produced many pieces that look professionally carved. I purchased it this time for a friend. Great attention to detail with excellent diagrams and photos.
I was very impressed with the book. Learning without a video or instructor is challenging, I found this books text and accompanying pictures invaluable.
If looking for a complete guide to chip carving as a beginner, this is not the book to buy. Lots of beautiful pictures, but no real sense as to how to accomplish them.
