The one star rating is not directed at the content of the book, but rather this particular edition of the book. This appears to be a greatly condensed version. I realize that it has less page numbers listed than the other editions, but I thought that it may have been a miscalculation since it is listed as an estimate. However, this version of the book is significantly shorter than the original edition, so if you are looking for the original, look elsewhere. I am unsure what was removed from the book exactly, but a large amount of content from the original edition seems to be missing.
This book is a translation of notes taken by a householder devotee who visited Ramakrishna from time to time. We get to learn how he lived, how he was thinking and how he interacted with his devotees. His love for others regardless of age, color or faith, his renunciation of worldly objects, his desire to uplift his devotees and his thinking and acting like an instrument of divine mother comes through very well. Very inspirational. Indeed those who were in his presence were very fortunate.
The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna is the English translation of the Sri Sri Ramakrishna Kathamrita, the conversation of the great Indian saint, Sri Ramakrishna, with his disciples, devotees and visitors, as recorded by Mahendranath Gupta, who was later considered a saintly person himself, as recorded by Paramahansa Yogananda in his wonderful, Autobiography of a Yogi.This book transports the reader to another space and time, at the feet of this great Indian master, whose words are nectar for the soul of anyone seeking the truth underpinning this life.It is said that keeping the company of saints is one of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves. The divine presence of Sri Ramakrishna is palpable in this magical book, which will penetrate the soul of the reader and lead to greater depths of love and understanding.
I came to this book after following Avatar Meher Baba. Baba pointed the way towards many true saints and, especially, Perfect Masters of history. In the West there is St. Francis of Assisi, St. Theresa of Avila, St. Catherine of Sienna and St. Augustine of Hippo. But in the East, especially India, Persia and Turkey, there are many, many more. Also, there is, or was in the case of Turkey and Persia, a culture more sustaining of true seeking for God while here in the West religion has become a tool of politics and commercialism rather than the path to God it was solely meant to be. Anyway, Sri Ramakrishna was one of the true Perfect Masters and His life was an inspiring insight into this world of seeking and love for God.
The author 'M' is lovingly described in Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi." To sense a Master's greatness one must only observe the changes lives of the disciples. Such is the effect of Ramakrishna on 'M' and such is 'M's effect on the students of his own school which was housed in Yogananda's former home.I highly recommend this book for the purity of the teachings herein recorded and for the lifechanging effect it will have on your life.
While the previous reviewer makes a valid point concerning the abbreviated nature of this version of The Gospel, their assessment that it is, therefore, fairly worthless is incorrect. I've version of the The Gospel has it's place and value as well. The author, the great Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of the Master, presents well-chosen events from the vastly longer original by M. in a powerful and highly accessible manner. The slightly different phrasing and emphasis in this rendition has opened some windows which were previously closed to me, insights which escaped me because of the language and phrasing used in the other translations. This is a marvelous version of the most important book ever written. I highly recommend it.
Pure words of truth from a God incarnate soul. Everyone on the spiritual path must read this most brilliant work.
