This is a typical “Image of War†series book: the series name might be mistaken to indicate it is primarily a photo book when in fact it also contains a good deal of text covering the subject on hand. I personally could use more photos and less text in this series. The photos in this book are reproduced better than some other books in the series, well printed for the semi-glossy paper used, but often not the best. They cover both the gun tank and some of the vehicles derived from them such as self-propelled artillery. The color plates are okay but also not the best, usually but not always one per page for 15 pages, which makes them large but also limits the number provided.The text is written to appeal to the “fan boy†– those people who praise certain items because they adore it not for its merits, discounting the pros of other options and hyping up the value of their favored machinery. For example, in his book that covers the Panzerkampfwagen III (published the same year), Anthony Tucker-Jones denigrates the Panzer IV, downplaying the value of the short 7.5cm (75mm) L/24 KwK gun it started with as unsuited for tank versus tank combat, using pick-and-choose commentary for the long 5cm (50mm) gun later mounted on the Panzer III to make it seem superior to the 7.5 let alone Allied cannon in use in North Africa at the time. He quotes a maximum velocity (which number is in error in error itself) based on tungsten-cored APCR ammunition and which was not the standard ammunition. To quote: “This was why Guderian really wanted the bigger, high-velocity 50mm gun as it would be able to fire a HE shell big enough to the same job as the L/24.†Nope, the 5cm HE round was poor compared to any 75mm HE round. In said book, he uses quick production numbers to indicate the value of the Panzer III compared to the Panzer IV: “However, about 10,300 Panzer III chassis were given over to assault-gun production. This means well over 16,400 Panzer III and its variants were built compared to 13,400 Panzer IV and variants.â€In this book, he does the opposite, belittling the Panzer III and posing the short 7.5cm as a superior weapon in North Africa. As far as importance of types to the German Army, he downplays the production numbers for the Panzer III: “When all the other variants using the Panzer IV chassis are taken into account, the overall total is 13,400. In contrast just over 6,100 Panzer III were built between 1937 and 1943. It proved far more useful as an assault gun platform with 8,600 StuG IIIs – the latter though were not tanks.†The StuG IIIs were not tanks, but they were one spine in the backbone of the German army, and much more capable at fighting than the many of the alternate Panzer IV vehicles, while the most numerous alternate was the equivalent Stug IV or Jagdpanzer IV or the Panzer IV/70s with a better cannon, all turretless assault guns.On the same page he lauds the Panzer IV for being upgradable and also claims that a “very serious shortcoming“ of the M4 Sherman was that it could not be. The Panzer IV was unable to accept the 75mm KwK42 yet the British mounted the equally powerful 17 pounder on the M4 Sherman tank; the Panzer IV could not accept more armor than the 80mm hull front and 50mm turret front but the U.S. slathered armor onto the M4 to produce the M4A3E2 Jumbo with up to 7 inches of frontal armor.The obsolete suspension system and other factors hindered further improvement. By May 1942 the Panzer IV Ausf G represented the end of significant upgrades for the obsolete 1935 design that was the Panzer IV. Of course the “fan boys†might blindly rant and rave on those comments trying to take them out of context as if I am saying the Panzer IV was useless; the Panzer IV was a decent tank that was effective in combat when piloted by a good crew, but it was not a super tank.The limits of the 1935 Panzer IV design were known by the Germans, which is why they were working on a replacement. Which led to the Panzer V Panther.Not all of the text is blatantly biased, and he provides some nuanced commentary that is level, but the occasional attempts to wash away competition (sometimes with outright lies) is annoying.This is a decent photo book with some nice if sometimes substandard text and a smallish collection of related photos. But not meaty overall.
