About the Author
Laila Ibrahim spent much of her career as a preschool director, a birth doula, and a religious educator. That work, coupled with her education in developmental psychology and attachment theory, provided ample fodder for the stories in her novels, Paper Wife, Mustard Seed, and Yellow Crocus.She’s a devout Unitarian Universalist, determined to do her part to add a little more love and justice to our beautiful and painful world. She lives with her wonderful wife, Rinda, and two other families in a small cohousing community in Berkeley, California. Her young adult children are her pride and joy.Laila is blessed to be working full-time as a novelist. Before starting “Paper Wife,†I started 3 different books, and couldn’t finish any of them. Some published novelists are purely amateurs. Ms. Ibrahim is a very talented writer. Finally, a book I could finish and truly enjoy. She makes you care about her very human characters. The plight of Chinese immigrants was harrowing. Their reasons for coming to the U.S. were varied, but their struggles to succeed the same. In light of our present day immigration issues, this is a timely book. I look forward to reading other novels by Ms. Ibrahim.
PAPER WIFE by Laila IbrahimMei Ling is the younger daughter in a newly impoverished family. When her sister is betrothed to a complete stranger, Mei is happy it is not her and unhappy to see her sister leving China for the United States. Very quickly, everything changes when Mei Ling’s sister becomes ill and Mei Ling is forced to impersonate her sister and marry the stranger.Well written and researched, this novel tells of “wives,†“daughters,†“sons and cousins†paid for and brought to the US as “paper relatives†in the early 1920’s. It has become impossible to emigrate to the US and China is suffering greatly. This subterfuge to bring impoverished Chinese to the US often results in prostitution and servitude. Mei Lings fears are not unfounded.Ibrahim has written an engrossing tale of one such “paper wife.†Her characters are clearly drawn, the sights, smells and inhabitants of San Francisco’s Chinatown are related in intimate detail. This book held my attention throughout. Character development and story line were most interesting. I learned much about the immigration history of our country, of which I was completely unaware. I will recommend this for book club reading due to its relativity to current immigration concerns in our country. “Give me your tired, your poor†has had many disruptions during our country’s brief history, sadly !
I really enjoyed this book, and I like the characters. I kept waiting for it to get depressing, considering the subject, but never did. I found it very uplifting. People are basically good. Women are strong. True in life, and true in the book. It must have taken an amazing amount of research too. I loved her other two books also. Will look forward to the next.
This is an outstanding story about the struggles of immigrants as they desperately try to improve their lives and those they call family. BRAVO! Although It is historical fiction, it is an extremely timely novel. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free." Well done, Laila Ibrahim!
This book was very meaningful to me as my mother was born and raised in China and Angel Island a special destination as a child for me. The story of Mei Ling and her horrendous trip from Asia to California was experienced by thousands. It was appalling , but the determination of so many Chinese to better themselves, study hard, work endlessly and live the dream became reality. Kai Li, her paper husband, who proved his worth and devotion to her and his children. And a faith in beliefs, centuries old. Beautifully written and a tribute to so many. Highly recommended.
These days immigration is much in the news and now with the government shutdown over the southern wall/ barrier, I found this very interesting about the Chinese immigration in 1920's. I had know about the Chinese labor to build the transcontinental railroad, but was unaware about Angel Island and the restrictions that resulted. I also had heard of paper wife, but t did not know the definition. I learned a lot and can recommend it to anyone searching for answers about current immigration problems.
I always learn a lot by reading this authors 's books. Please keep them coming! I was aware of the prejudice of Chinese families in the U S but didn't realize the extent of the legislation surrounding it. Will we ever learn ? History repeats itself for people who don't care to read !
