I have never been big on devotionals - and this is not really such.But this book can be used as a great tool for feeding and tending to your Spirit.Towns has placed all the Psalms into 11 sections (chapters) and offers a helpful 1-2 page introduction to each of these. Here he offers advice on how to read, pray and think through the Psalms in each particular Chapter. His insights into how to pray, and what to pray are truly helpful.In addition, Towns has rewritten all the Psalms into a more usable (English) format that he encourages you to use as a direct prayer to God. He respects the original language, and teaches with it, but offers simply another tool to use in talking to God. I tend to first read the Psalm in a more traditional translation (nasb) and then use his rewritten form to speak more plainly to God.Finally, he has created and index on various topics we all face, and listed the various Psalms that deal with these. This is truly helpful to those facing life's trials and joys. If you need: guidance, healing, wisdom or protection from God - you can find those Psalms that pertain. Or if you want to celebrate with the Psalmist God's: forgiveness, authority and Holiness.This is a great tool - and has a wide range of application to the soul in distress or wanting to praise our creator.
Great way to pray when you can't think of what to say.
I've been fascinated by the Psalms for the past couple of years and I grab anything I find that helps me 'experience' them.This book is a very useful way of experiencing the full gamut of emotions the Psalms emit. Towns stays true to the full context of the words but provides a more intimate form of reading them, well, in fact, praying them. I prayed one per day for 150 days.Towns also provides some background on the various groups of Psalms which I also found particularly enlightening.I wholly recommend soaking in the Psalms because one comes to get a better understanding of God's heart. And this interpretation is a very useful way of experiencing them. I intend to start all over again tomorrow.
When my mom passed away, I was told to read 5 Psalms a day to go through the grief process. This book is much more than Psalms put into prayers, but lots of history and info included. Also categories for different emotions. I bought it in paperback and now again on kindle to have it while traveling. Highly recommended. Thank you for writing such a helpful book!
What a mountain of wisdom is unveiled in this book! Not only is the reader shown the practical way of praying the Scriptures back to the Lord, but also the nuggets of truths are dropped by the author along the way. Very enjoyable.
Elmer Towns presents a wonderful way to read and pray The Psalms. I wonder why it took me so long to find this aid to The Psalms and prayer.
