About the Author
Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis is Distinguished Professor and Director of the Music Cognition Lab at the University of Arkansas and will serve as president of the Society for Music Perception and Cognition from 2019 to 2020. Her book On Repeat: How Music Plays the Mind (2013) won the Wallace Berry Award from the Society for Music Theory and the Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Her research has been supported by the National Science Foundation.

This interesting book is a review of what we do and don’t know about music and it covers a wide range of topics. It’s intended for all who are interested in music (which is most of us), and author Margulis uses clear explanations in accessible language. Margulis goes back in history briefly and as needed, but she’s more interested in modern observations, what recent scientific studies have explored, and contemporary approaches to music and the role of the mind. She’s done all the studying for us and each chapter contains references for those wishing to learn more. For instance, she recounts how the fad of playing Mozart for babies began, and notes that, while music styles rise from and reflect different cultures, lullabies across countries tend to have similar characteristics. The role of music education and how children can benefit from it is discussed, and how this training can still produce benefits years later. She discusses the relationship between music and speech, the role repetition can play in both, and how the rhythm of the way we speak can be heard in music, too.Her discussion touches on the use of computers to replicate and understand music, although the ability of computers to show human expression “has proven more elusiveâ€. She describes research studies of creativity and jazz, and the different elements that make up what we call musicality.The diverse topics Margulis covers are too broad to cover in this summary, but this is an interesting read. Why do we like some types of music and have no interest in others? Why is music so important to us? Why do performance halls evoke different responses in us to headphones? Margulis shows there are many answers, and she’s attempted to uncover as many as possible in a slender book.The only concern I had about this is that the font in the book I received is a tad lighter than what I am used to, so it made reading a little more challenging than expected. But the content is excellent.
This book delivers what it promises: a very short introduction to the psychology of music. The author is clearly an expert in this field, and thus serves as a reliable guide. The writing style is precise enough, without being unnecessarily academic.We learn from this book that psychology of music is an interdisciplinary field, and while we've learned much, there is still much more to be learned. As a psychological phenomenon, music remains somewhat mysterious.We also learn that music perception is a complex phenomenon, which draws on multiple brain regions, and is influenced by individual personality and experiences, culture, expectations, other senses besides hearing, and other aspects of context.I can recommend this book to anyone who enjoys music and wants to get some initial ideas about why they enjoy it and what factors affect their enjoyment.
