What are amphibians what and why. This is a really nice book. It has great high quality pictures. The first topic that is covered is the definition of amphibian. I like how this book is formatted. The pages that have writing also have a picture of an amphibian. The pictures show a wide variety of amphibians from frogs and lizards to skinks and salamanders. This book does a great job of describing them and differentiates between what is common for most amphibians. It clearly states what they all have in common; like that all are vertebrates and then goes on to give a basic definition of vertebrate. Each time they introduce a new big word or concept it is fully explained in easy to understand language. This book introduces a concept like how amphibians have adapted to live in many habitats by giving examples of habitats (lakes, streams, ponds and others) then reinforces that concept with pictures. I like asking children questions while reading to make sure they are learning. Since there are so many great pictures I ask the natural question “what kind of habitat do you think this amphibian is living in? I wish the pictures said, so it wasn’t entirely guess work, but it is still a good question and encourages you to talk more in depth about some features of the unique habitats. I think it is great that this book mentions just how sensitive amphibians are to pollution. I really wish they said just a little more about this. I spent years studying amphibians and their habitats. The mere presence of healthy amphibians is a good indicator that there isn’t pollution, because if there were most amphibians wouldn’t survive. The book ends with a brief description of what they eat and how long they have been around according to fossil record.I think this book is age appropriate for first graders. It gives a taste of what amphibians are, and is a great launching pad for discussion and further exploration. I received this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review.
I downloaded the ebook, "What Are Amphibians?, What & Why : 1st Grade Science Series: First Grade Books - Herpetology for my daughter who turned five in Dec 2015. She really enjoyed the book. This book is filled with beautiful bright pictures of Amphibians, and has some really great facts in the book. I felt that it explained the facts in a way a child as young as four or five years of age could understand easily and gave enough information to keep a child up to 8 years of age entertained. I found that all the facts were accurate as well.As far as a first grader being able to easily read this independently on their own there were quite a few larger harder to sound out words in this book making it pretty hard for a child at that reading level to do be successful at that goal. (I do have a teaching background for this age group) I do however feel that if this is for a first grade child to read independently the length was a good length for that level and ability. Since I was reading it for my daughter I do agree with another reviewer that I think we both would of enjoyed it to be longer, but I do not believe that the author intended it to be for a parent to read to child more for a child to read it on their own.I did give it the four stars based on the fact I do think this would be a little more challenging for a first grader reading at a first grade level to read independently based on having many harder to sound out words in the book which is what I believe the authors goal was when writing this book.I did receive this product at a discounted price for a honest and unbiased review. Thank you!!!
What are Amphibians? What & Why: First Grade Science Series from Baby Professor is an excellent book to teach your preschooler to 1st grader about what amphibians are and why they exist. Amphibian basically means 2 lives, which is from the fact that amphibians can live both on land and in water. We have purchased several books from Baby Professor and have never been disappointed. There are topics from geology to history to science and they always have great full color pictures – sometimes they are amazing hand drawn pieces of art, other times they are beautiful full color photographs. What are Amphibians has the full color photographs of several different varieties of amphibians like frogs and lizards and salamanders. My four (almost 5) year old and I love these educational books from Baby Professor. We sometimes read through the books and sometimes we go through all the photos and talk about the amphibian in the photograph. One or two we had to Google because I wasn't even sure what they were. But all in all this is an excellent science book on amphibians for 3 – 7 year olds.I was offered this book for free or at a discount in exchange for my honest and unbiased review based on my own personal experience with the product, which this is.
I am a homeschooling mom to thirteen children. Books are an extensive part of our curriculum and life. We truly enjoyed the large and plentiful pictures throughout this book. I really appreciate photos of any kind in a book for young children but having large beautiful photos is fantastic. The pictures supported the text and allows for discussions about the subject matter as they drew you in. It had a good amount of information included to give a good base of understanding on these creatures.I felt the text was a bit higher (some words) than what the typical reader of this age would be comfortable with reading themselves but was suitable for being read to. I also felt the book was short, I wanted more, but for a younger child it is probably the right amount for them to take in at one sitting. Over all, a great little book for opening the mind to the enchanting world of amphibians!ProsGREAT photosInformativeNot too longConsEnds abruptly (more of an issue with a kindle version than with a paper version where you realize it is coming to an end)My review was given in exchange for a free kindle copy of this book. It is an honest review and based on my satisfaction with the product.
