About the Author
Jabari Asim is the author of several adult and children's books, including Preaching to the Chickens which was named one of the New York Times Best Illustrated Books of 2016 and Fifty Cents and a Dream-an NAACP Image Award Nominee, CCBC Choice, School Library Journal Editor's Choice, and Kirkus Best Book. He is an associate professor at Emerson College in Boston and the former executive editor of The Crisis, the magazine of the NAACP. He recently was honored with a Guggenheim Fellowship. He lives in Newton, Massachusetts.Lynn Gaines is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art and has been illustrating greeting cards for more than 20 years. She lives in Northeast Ohio with her husband, mother, and two crazy cats. This is her first picture book.

Completely in love with this book. I read it with my 5.5 year old. I chose it for two reasons. The first being that it is written by a person of color so I know I won’t be getting a white washed version. Secondly, it is absolutely vital to teach our children the history of the United States that is left out during their schooling. I didn’t learn these things until I took an ethnic studies class IN COLLEGE as an ELECTIVE! I am a white presenting minority and it is my duty as it is to anyone with privilege to educate our children on these discrepancies in our country.
Love it, not sugar coated, but still beautifully presented for a child. I love how thoroughly done this is, and the pictures are beautiful. Black History is American History 💓 every child, and adult should know this stuff. Just what I needed for a core of our home African-American history unit.
I purchased this book for my 8-year-old twins. It is AWESOME! Provides so much in-depth information, not just surface stuff. Very pleased. A wonderful addition to my children's home library.
This is a very important book and should be required reading in every school in the country. It's beautifully written and gorgeously illustrated.
