As someone who's been a Prince fan for literally as long as I can remember, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist reading this book. Initially, I did feel a tiny bit of skepticism, for headlines and the Prince fandom alike loved to give the impression that Mayte was being a sell-out, and that she should be ashamed of herself for writing a tell-all book to cash in on the death of a world icon. However, that's not what this book is in the slightest.A pretty big chunk of Mayte's life was spent with Prince, so this is very much her story to tell. She does not pretend to know every detail about Prince's life, she does not pretend to know what precisely was going through his mind during some of the lowest moments of life. She does not use 300+ pages to give away juicy and scandalous secrets about his life. Instead, she gives readers a glimpse into what her life was like growing up as young belly-dancer, and getting swept up into a whirlwind friendship-turned-romance with a real-life Prince charming. Ever a mysterious man, even to those closest to him, Mayte simply sheds some light on the unique view she had of him, first as his "student", then as an employee, then as a wife, and then, as someone who understandably had issues with him but still loved him from afar despite tremendous loss and heartache.Highly recommended for every Prince fan who wants a brief glimpse into the man behind the Icon.
This book was wrote from the heart. The love they shared was beyond compare but the heartache was beyond repair . It takes you on a personal journey from start to finish. 5 stars. A must read.
If you approach this book with an open mind and no preconceived notions you will find an interesting, heartfelt, well-told and hauntingly tragic story.Whatever you may think of her, if anything at all, there is something beautiful and yet heart wrenching of him to be gleaned from her words. The picture she paints of him, rather than a caricature, confirms an incredibly intelligent musical savant and remarkably flawed weirdo who was often emotionally disconnected from others and, at times, just plain unpleasant. But, her glimpse behind the proverbial curtain further reveals a beautifully complex human being with a huge heart, steadfast (or, stubborn) faith in God, and unfortunately, a long-damaged little boy lurking just beneath the surface. She also confirms that each was simultaneously shattered during 1996. The lingering unanswered question is whether/to what extent he reassembled the shards during the two decades of his life that followed. I don't suppose we'll never truly know the answer.Would he be angry with her for publishing this? No doubt. It’s difficult to imagine him being anything short of absolutely livid over having been portrayed in such a fallible manner. Will you nevertheless find him (infuriating warts and all) more endearing as seen through her eyes? Yes. From between the lines fliows the unmistakeable sense that he would've been a very good father and, in turn, being a father would've almost certainly proven very good for him. That's the reason to read this book.
I have never written a review of a product on here before, but this book deserves it. I literally received this book 5 hours ago, and have since finished it already! I could NOT put this book down!! Beautifully written book!
Really good read. If there was a happier ending it would make a great big screen movie. As I was reading it I was really hoping that they could have gotten back together before he died. Mayte really made this a long love letter to him. Even through the imperfect times she was very kind in her story telling. Great read, sad but very Interesting.
This is a beautifully written book by a woman who clearly had a deep and lasting connection to Prince. I thought the book was very respectful towards Prince. There were no salacious details - just a lovely tribute. I admire her courage in writing about the death of their son. I truly wish her a life filled with happiness.
